Time management is a tough topic for most people. This is a great topic because it is one that absolutely does not get covered in law school. In law school, life is all about preparing but ultimately cramming in the end. For trial lawyers, this strategy can sometimes get you through – but it is exhausting and not at all sustainable. In a perfect world we would all get an even amount of work done on a nice 40 hour work week. But, this too, doesn’t feel attainable for most.
To combat the mental, emotional, and sometimes even employment pain, practicing strong time management skills is vital. However, we all know this is easier said than done.
I find apps to be extremely useful – since I’m already on my phone all day anyway. Here are a list of a few of my favorites:
- TrialPad – helps create paperless trial presentations
- A good business card reader can scan business cards and store them all electronically for you
- A great to-do list app is my best suggestion. Finding one that can also be merged with your calendar is best. I stick to google for this reason. Plus, you can color-code and set reminders.
After apps, I find forcing myself to focus on one task for a set amount of time is a life-saver. The time it takes to switch tasks really adds up, even if it doesn’t feel like it. It takes the brain a few minutes to catch up where you last left off. And you may have to find key emails or files between cases.
Time management is tough in any profession, but the intense schedules and amount of materials make it even harder for a lawyer. Starting my company, LawTrades, has truly taught me the importance of time management and I hope you can get it down as well.
Hope this helps!
